Patents are a type of intellectual property. It is a collection of exclusive rights granted by a sovereign state to an inventor or assignee for a limited time in exchange for the public disclosure of an invention.

A patent is a legal monopoly awarded by a government to the owner of an invention for a specified duration. The mere possession of a patent does not provide the owner the right to utilize or exploit the protected innovation. Other laws, such as health and safety regulations, food and drug regulations, or even other patents, may still influence that privilege. In the perspective of the law, a patent is a property right that may be given away, inherited, sold, licensed, or even abandoned. Because it is granted by the government, it can be revoked by the government at any moment, even after it has been granted or sold or licensed.
